Thank you for taking the time to read our basic advice page. This is intended for anyone looking to rehome a rescued animal.

Commitment

Owning an animal can be a huge commitment and it's essential that you think about your decision to take a pet in, in particular a rescued animal. The charities will be checking your current situation and looking to see whether the animal you choose would be suitable for you. Of course, while we would all love to see an animal rehomed, it would be awful if the animal was to be rehomed yet again.

So, please, please ensure you can dedicate the necessary time to the animal's wellbeing and also ensure you read the Application Restrictions for each charity before you contact.

Feeding

When you rehome your animal, your charity will give you advice on the type of food that is needed. Please listen to them and don't try and buy the cheapest food possible. They may suggest you use a more specialised higher quality food and while this may be a little more expensive, it will be better for the animal. Changing their regular food is not recommended unless you have good reason to. If you have any problems such as the animal is not eating the food or has diarrhoea, you should seek further advice from either your Vet.

Health Care

Once you take an animal in, they are relying on you to give it the best possible care. You should maintain regular flea and worming, skin care where necessary as well as any other supplements such as Arthritis care. Grooming is an important part of keeping your animals coat healthy but also bonding with the animal and establishing trust.

Exercise and Training

Some animals can be trained easily and others not so due to many factors. The most important factors are being able to exercise the dog in a controlled manor. If you are struggling with this, again, please contact your Vet, or a behaviourist or ask a question on the Forum. You should never be agressive with the animal as this will only make things worse.
